The Kentucky Derby is in our rear view mirror, and once again the racing community looks forward to the second jewel of the sport's triple crown, the Preakness Stakes. I hope some of you took my advice and played I'll Have Another in the Derby...and maybe didn't take my advice on some of the other horses. All in all, I felt good with my picks. The Derby is unlike any other race, there are traffic issues and obstacles that these horses will never face again during the entirety of their careers. My top pick, Union Rags, got unlucky once again and was fenced in early, only able to get up for seventh. Gemologist, my other pick along with I'll Have Another, finished a distant 16th but was found to have suffered a foot bruise that most likely hindered his ability to run. Bodemeister truly shocked me. As the pace scenario unfolded, I was certain the race was setting up the way I had predicted. Bodemeister, Hansen, and Trinniberg were running blistering fractions (21.5 opening quarter...scary), and the rest of the field was stalking. Trinniberg and Hansen fell off, but Bodemeister held on to grab place. Dullahan also surprised me a bit. Not that he was running at the end, but that he was able to get up for show. Overall a fantastic Derby and an intriguing setup for tomorrow's Preakness.

First off, who won't be there. Dale Romans has decided to rest Dullahan and point towards the Belmont, in hopes that the longer distance will suit his late runner better than the Preakness. Union Rags will also be pointed towards the Belmont, where a clean trip is easier to come by, and the mile and a half can cure most starting gate ills. Hansen will also miss the Preakness (as well as the Belmont), as his connections have finally come to the realization that he is miler, not a route runner. The field for the Preakness remains strong, with eleven horses entered, including six Derby starters. Those are Went the Day Well (impressive 4th place finish), Creative Cause (5th), Bodemeister (2nd), Daddy Nose Best (10th), Optimizer (11th), and of course Derby winner I'll Have Another. They join newcomers Tiger Walk (4th in the Wood Memorial), Teeth of the Dog (3rd Wood Memorial), Pretension (1st Canonero II), Zhttp://www.kentuckysports.co/index.php?option=com_easyblog&view=dashboard&layout=write&Itemid=2etterholm (1st NY-bred Stakes), and Romans-trained Cozzetti (4th in the Arkansas Derby).

I'll go ahead and start off by saying that I believe the best horses in this field are the entries who also ran in the Derby. Prevailing logic will tell you that the best three year olds in the country were all in that race, and very seldom does a horse win the Preakness that did not start in the Derby. That being said, its not unheard of, but in recent years it has taken a special horse with a legitimate reason to not have run the Derby to pull it off (see: Rachel Alexandra). I'll narrow my analysis to whom I consider the contenders.

Bodemeister: I am still incredibly impressed that this horse was able to stay up for place after such a fast start at Churchill. The main difference between that race and the Preakness will be the lack of fellow early speed to push Bodemeister's pace. This would seem like a pretty big advantage on the surface, and there is a very real possibility that if the field allows Bodemeister to set and keep his own pace, he'll run away it. The word is that he has trained very well for Bob Baffert since the Derby. It would appear there is nothing not to like about this horse going into Pimlico, but I have this feeling that that effort in the 1 1/4 mile KY Derby had to take a lot out of him, and when Mike Smith comes asking down the stretch, there won't be enough in the tank do take the Black Eyed Susans.

Kenneth Faried finished his rookie season in an impressive fashion, averaging 10 rebounds per game and just over 10 points per game during the playoffs. During the regular season he averaged 10.2 PPG and 7.7 RPG.

Faried exceeded expectations after being selected by the Denver Nuggets with the 22nd pick in the first round of this past seasons NBA draft. Faried will always be remembered as one of the greatest athletes to ever come out of Morehead State and very well may have a long NBA career ahead of him.

Faried finished 3rd in the NBA in the rookie of the year voting behind Kyrie Irving and Ricky Rubio as you can see here.

Faried finished his career at Morehead State as the #1 rebounder not only in the history of his college but in the modern era (since 1973) of D1 college basketball.  Faried had 1,570 rebounds during his career at Morehead St.  Tim Duncan previously held the all-time career rebounding record.

Here is an article from the Denver Post discussing the great success Faried enjoyed during his first season as a Nugget.

Here is another Denver Post article from last month where the author refers to Faried with the amazing nickname of "Manimal" and describes him as being possibly the only player in the league who can contest Blake Griffin at the rim.

k-start-rearpg-horizontalThe Kentucky Derby has come and gone. Just like that the biggest time of the year here in Louisville has ended, which is sad to see but what a time it was. Beginning in the morning, the KYSCO crew had the opportunity to do our Weekend Sports Buzz Radio Show(1450am) on Derby so the day already started out right. The two hours in studio talking ponies with fans, choosing the winne,r as I did, and being able to do the pre-derby show was awesome and one thing I won't forget.

Moving into Churchill was next. We headed downtown to hop on the media shuttle which was nice. Hot, but nice. We avoided the fan traffic which was nuts as we all agreed we have not seen the fanfare as big as yesterday, which ended up being a Derby crowd record of over 160,000 people. From there the races went off smoothly. Great weather for everyone, the infield was packed and wild as always. The celebrities piled in which did include the starting five for the 2012 National Champion Kentucky Wildcats, plus senior Eloy Vargas and coaches. Speaking of coaches, John Calipari was the honorary "Riders Up!" call man which was kind of funny to watch but what can you do, its an honor! Then the time had come, The running of the Roses, the fastest two minutes in sports, the Kentucky Derby.

The race started off very fast with potential favorite "Bodemeister" running the first two turns as the 5th fastest recorded time in Derby history with some company of long shot sprinter "Trinniberg," who later tired out in the stretch. But Bodemeister, trained by Bob Baffert, seemed to have the race in the bag as they came to the final stretch with about a five horse lead before "I'll Have Another" came charging from the outside. Doug O'Neill's horse who started from the 19 pole position, a spot which has never produced a winner, came storming down the stretch to catch Bodemeister and take home the 138th Kentucky Derby back to California. "Dullahan" finished in third place while "Union Rags" who went off as the favorite, dropped way back early to only finish in seventh.

The day in all was great for the fans, media, and hundreds of workers BUT there was also some horrific news as a body was found early this morning. A security guard found the body of a 44-year old Hispanic man inside of Barn 8, but as of now do not know how he was killed. Officials say there is no suspect at this point and that an autopsy will be performed for more information as we hope this is solved knowing that is not how anyone wanted the day to end. Other than that Churchill Downs couldn't have asked for a better Derby. Louisville did it right as always, once again showing why Kentucky does horse racing best and I already can't wait for the 139th running next May!

I, like many other Louisvillians, am a massive horseracing fan, and this week is our Super Bowl. I won't bore you with details of my love affair with the sport of Kings, instead I'd like to provide you with a Cliff's Notes version of my view on this year's Run for the Roses.

First, its far too easy to get overwhelmed while analyzing a twenty horse field, so I have to throw out half of the field right off the bat. What remains are my short list of contenders. I'll start with the favorites.

Hansen: As much hype as Hansen has gotten the last six months since his impressive win in the Breeder's Cup Juvenile, I am not sold on him. There is no doubt he is an impressive specimen, but he lacks the breeding for a mile and a quarter, and is coming off a loss in Keeneland's Bluegrass Stakes. His Breeder's Cup win was impressive, but Union Rags had him in his sights despite a troubled trip and likely would have run him down if the race was even a 1/16 mile longer. He should get plenty of action, as his owner is a character whose antics have been drawing attention locally. His morning line is 10-1, but I expect he will be bet down before post. I will most likely use him in exotics, but will keep him off my top line.

Union Rags: An impressive specimen, and in my opinion the horse to beat in this field. While his pedigree may also lean closer to the mile and 1 1/8 distances, he has been strong, even in defeat. Hansen bested him in the BC Juvenile last Novemeber over the Churchill oval, but Union Rags was coming hard, and if that race had been ten yards longer he would have taken it. Plus, he has been one of the best looking horses in training this week at Churchill, burning up the track last Saturday with relative ease. He has a pressing style that will keep him just behind the lead pack, ready to use his late kick to run down the leaders and take the roses. Also, Julien Leparoux is driving him, and he would like nothing better than to take the roses before moving his tack to New York. He opened at 9/2. Expect him to remain the second choice or possibly become the favorite by post time.

Bodemeister: The morning line favorite, Bodemeister is coming off an impressive eight length victory in the Arkansas Derby. He blew the rest of the entries away, essentially wiring the field in one of the most prominent Derby preps in the country. However, he had an unmolested, clean trip from start to finish, a luxury seldom afforded Derby horses. He is also a pure speed horse who likes to run out front. This style tends to be a deal breaker on Derby day. Also, he is lightly raced, having not been raced at all as a 2 year old. You'll hear this stat bandied about alot on Saturday, as no horse since 1882 has won the big one without racing as a juvenile. He opened at 4-1 and will remain the first or second choice (I think settling around 5-1) by post time.

2012kyderbylogoIt is Wednesday of Derby week here in the Louisville area which means it is time for the pole positions for the 138th Running of the Roses to be selected today at 5:00pm. You can catch the first look at this year's full Derby field and which post number you're favorite will be starting from when selected later today on ESPN. Some of you may think "who cares?", but positioning is very important as James Scully from ESPN describes:

Post positions are always important in the 20-horse field—a contestant risks getting shuffled back if stuck down on the rail—and the innermost post cost Lookin at Lucky, who was probably the best horse in the field, any chance in 2010.

It is very important to get off to an early start and not be squeezed out of the pack to the back of the field and all the jockeys and horses will do whatever it takes this Saturday, May 5th for their opportunity to appear in Churchill Downs's Winners Circle!

This past Thursday 4/19, former Louisville Cardinal and former Super Bowl Champion (with the New Orleans Saints) Earl Heyman defeated Chris Bascler to become the 2012 Heavyweight Golden Gloves Boxing Champion in the state of Indiana.

Earl participates in the Indiana Golden Gloves program because the state of Kentucky doesn’t participate in the Golden Gloves amateur boxing development program.

Golden Gloves Heavyweight Champion appears to be the final step for Earl as he is expected to join the professional ranks later in 2012.

The Kentucky Derby Classic Basketball Game will be Friday, April 6th in Freedom  Hall. The game is sponsored by Papa Johns and is always a great game to see some local rising stars as well as high school seniors who will be going to local teams. The game will have Louisville commit from Shaker Heights, Ohio Terry Rozier as well as three Indiana commits. There is still a chance that 2 more will join the game. Speculation is that Nerlens Noel and maybe UK commit William Cauley.

"This is one of the strongest lineups in the recent history of the Derby Festival Basketball Classic," said Mike Gandolfo and Keith Conrad, the event's co-recruiting chairs. "We expect it will be a highly entertaining and competitive game. Many of the top programs in the country are represented on the roster and we know the players will have great success at the next level."

ON SALE NOW, Basketball Classic tickets are $11 and $16 (includes $1 facility fee) and are available at TicketMaster locations (www.ticketmaster.com), by phone (800-745-3000) or the Freedom Hall box office (502-367-5144).

Former Louisville Cardinal offensive tackle Breno Giacomini has signed a two year contract extension for the Seattle Seahawks.  The contract includes a $1.5 million base salary for the 2012 season and $3 million in 2013.

Giacomini started 8 games last season, due to multiple injuries across the offensive line. Breno will be receiving a pay raise after making only $600,000 last season.

In case you were wondering I wasn’t joking. I am paid $2 million base salary to write for www.kentuckysports.co

After playing for the Louisville Cardinals as a tight end during his freshman and sophomore seasons Breno showed up to fall camp in 2006 weighing 303 pounds (he weighed 242 the previous season) and the coaching staff moved him to the offensive line. After starting two games during his Junior season (while George Bussey was out with an injury). As a senior Breno was the starting right tackle all season and earned second-team All BIG EAST Conference honors.
